Leather Jackets Through the Decades

Leather jackets are one of the most long-living fashion staples in the modern world. It has been around the civilian fashion market since the first half of the 20th century when Irving Schott presented his eternal Perfecto jacket. Before that leather bomber jackets were a must-have for military aircraft pilots who had to endure the extremely low temperatures in open cockpits.

Since the inception of leather jackets, every decade has been marked by a specific style and in this article, we will look at vintage leather jackets of various decades that you can find in our shop.

70'S LEATHER JACKETS

In the 70's leather scene you can find references to the '50s and '60s in the form of biker jackets. Biker jackets continued to be favored among bikers club members and emerging punk bands such as Sex Pistols.

The same is true of sheepskin bomber jackets that were made popular by Silvester Stallone in his early Rocky series. However, in the 70ties emerged a new style of leather jacket that was particular for the era – a leather blazer jacket.

The 70s leather jacket is characterized by blazer-style lapels, buttons, and a clean-cut geometry. These jackets continued to ooze coolness and bad buy vibes, yet with a different, more spruced-up silhouette. In our shop, we are offering a wide range of leather blazer jackets from the '70s, 80's and '90s.

80's LEATHER JACKETS

During the eclectic '80s, one could argue that the most popular was the leather biker jacket and styles inspired by it. Especially in Eastern Europe where there was a delayed surge of punk aesthetics that brought a trend of studded biker jackets and colorful mohawks.

One of the trends in the '80s was dyed leather jackets. Before the 80's leather jackets have had a quite limited color choice: black, brown, or grey. It all changed in 80's when leather clothing exploded in colors as well as the decade as such. Leather jackets started to become more favored among women who appropriated the masculine biker jacket by adding some feminine touches.

Jackets from this era are characterized by wide biker jacket-inspired lapels, cropped silhouettes, and different patterns and fun colorways. In our stock, we have a decent collection of 80's leather jackets for men and women.

90's LEATHER JACKETS

In the 90's we can see the concurrence of styles from all the previous decades – there are biker jackets, bombers, and leather blazers. However, there is certain gravitation towards leather blazer-inspired jackets and short coats, especially among women.

The main heroines of the TV classic Sex and the City are well known for their liking of leather jackets. Another cult classic that comes to mind is The Matrix where Carrie-Anne Moss and Keanu Reeves are dressed in leather while navigating through the different realities and shooting big guns.

The leather trends of the 90ties were passed to naughties and nowadays we see all these styles coexisting in a post-modern “anything goes” street fashion where individuality is the key.
