WHAT IS SUEDE LEATHER?
Suede leather is basically the underside of the animal pelt that is removed from the more firmer top. The product of this splitting is a soft, luxurious leather that we all know as suede. Since it is thinner than regular leather, it is not that hard-wearing and resistant to punctures, however, the softness and sophisticated looks is what draw people to suede.
HOW TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REAL AND FAUX SUEDE?
The first thing to do is to check the tag and see whether it says “Genuine leather”, “Suede leather” etc. If your jacket is made in Germany or Austria then “Echtes leder” will mean that is made of natural suede. Italian suede jackets will have “Pelle naturale” or something of that sort involving the word “pelle”. Use Google translate if you don't know any of the words in the tag. Faux suede jackets will have a tag with “100% Polyester” or “Microsuede” written on it. If there is no tag, then check how heavy the jacket is because the faux suede is much lighter. You could also do a little experiment: scrub off a bit of the fabric with a stiff brush and burn it with a lighter – if it melts and smells like plastic then it is faux suede. Real suede will char and smell like burning hair.
DOES A SUEDE JACKET PROTECT FROM RAIN?
No, it is highly recommended to avoid getting in the rain with a suede jacket unless it is waterproofed with a suede spray. Rain can leave permanent watermarks, induce mildew growth and damage the fabric. There are plenty of Youtube video instructions on how to clean and waterproof suede jackets or footwear.
